Karen Grammer, Kelsey Grammer’s younger sister, was 18 years old when she was abducted from her workplace in Colorado Springs, Colorado, during the early hours of July 1, 1975. She had just graduated high school and moved to Colorado Springs shortly afterwards.

The Horrific Crime

Karen was kidnapped by Freddie Lee Glenn and two accomplices who initially intended to rob the Red Lobster restaurant where she worked. Glenn and his group unexpectedly abducted her, then repeatedly raped her before driving her to a remote location and brutally stabbing her 42 times, nearly decapitating her. In her final moments, she crawled about 400 feet to a nearby trailer door seeking help — but tragically, nobody assisted her before she succumbed to her injuries .

Prosecution & Kelsey’s Fight for Justice

Glenn was convicted in May 1976 on multiple murder charges including Karen’s murder, kidnapping, and aggravated robbery. He received three consecutive life sentences; Colorado had abolished the death penalty by then, commuting his death sentence.

Despite eligibility, parole has been denied multiple times (in 2009, 2014, and beyond), often with Kelsey Grammer submitting testimony or letters opposing his release. While he has expressed personal forgiveness for the remorseful Glenn, he maintains that Glenn does not deserve freedom.

Kelsey Grammer’s Memoir & Path to Healing

In his 2025 memoir, Karen: A Brother Remembers, Grammer memorializes his sister as vibrant, free-spirited, and deeply loved — far beyond her tragic end — and shares how her death shaped his life. Writing the memoir allowed him to face previously buried trauma. He accessed the full police report and learned new, harrowing truths about Karen’s final moments — details he had avoided for decades.

Grammer also revealed his personal struggle after Karen’s death, including years of substance abuse — charges related to alcohol, cocaine, DUIs, and even risky sexual behavior — which he says were coping mechanisms for guilt and grief.

In 2022, he returned to Colorado Springs to retrace Karen’s last steps. That pilgrimage helped him move from sorrow toward celebrating Karen’s life, not just mourning her death.

The effects of Karen’s murder span decades. It haunted Grammer’s personal life and career, contributing to his emotional and addiction struggles.
